Positioned on and around the former Galena Air Force Base and adjacent to the airstrip, just north of the river and northwest of town, GILA is surrounded by wilderness.. We cut down poplar, spruce, and birch around Galena in the winter time to feed the wood boiler to keep the Galena Interior Learning Academy. GILA is the second-largest and second-longest operating boarding school open to any Alaskan high school student.
